Your Step-by-Step Home Care Guide
Lip filler is a non-surgical aesthetic treatment that uses hyaluronic acid dermal filler to enhance the shape, volume and definition of the lips while maintaining a soft, natural appearance. Whether your treatment has been performed to restore lost volume, improve symmetry, define the cupid's bow or create fuller lips, it is completely normal to experience mild swelling, tenderness and bruising during the first few days. As the filler settles, your lips will gradually soften and the final result will become more visible. Following the correct aftercare plays an important role in minimising swelling, supporting the healing process and helping you achieve the best possible outcome from your treatment.
For the safest recovery and the best possible results, please follow the aftercare guide below.
Step 1: Reduce Swelling
Apply a clean, wrapped cold compress for 5–10 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours to help minimise swelling and discomfort.
Step 2: Avoid Touching Your Lips
Do not press, massage or pick at your lips for at least 24 hours unless specifically instructed by your practitioner.
Step 3: Skip Heat and Exercise
Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and excessive heat for 24–48 hours, as these may increase swelling and bruising.
Step 4: Be Careful When Eating
Choose soft foods where possible and eat slowly until the numbness has worn off to avoid accidentally biting your lips.
Step 5: Avoid Pressure on the Lips
Avoid kissing, smoking, using straws and placing unnecessary pressure on your lips for the first 24 hours to allow the filler to settle naturally.
Step 6: Keep Your Lips Hydrated
Drink plenty of water and use a gentle, fragrance-free lip balm to keep your lips comfortable while they heal.
Step 7: Be Patient With Your Results
It is normal for your lips to appear uneven or more swollen than expected initially, with final results typically visible after 10–14 days.
Step 8: Attend Your Review Appointment
If your treatment plan includes a review, attend your follow-up appointment so your practitioner can assess your results and determine whether any adjustments are required.
When to Contact AJM Aesthetics
Mild swelling, bruising and tenderness are expected following lip filler treatment and usually settle within a few days. However, please contact AJM Aesthetics immediately if you experience severe or worsening pain, excessive swelling, unusual skin discolouration, blistering, signs of infection or anything that causes concern. Early assessment is important to ensure the safest possible outcome.
Maintaining Your Results
The longevity of lip filler varies depending on your metabolism, lifestyle and the product used, but most clients enjoy their results for several months. Staying well hydrated, protecting your lips from excessive sun exposure and attending maintenance appointments as recommended by your practitioner will help keep your lips looking naturally full, hydrated and beautifully defined.
